October 2008
'Black Widow' by Paul Thain

By Kate Young - Friday, October 31st, 2008
(reproduced by kind permission of
the Isle of Wight County Press)

COWES Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society’s performance of Black Widow is well worth watching.
Faye Lushey gave a wholly believable performance in the lead role of brooding teenager Emily Arlington after stepping into the role for the ill Hattie Bury just days before curtain up — see news story on page 4.

Dinah Bowman is superb as Lady Isobel Arlington, the stern matriach of the family.

Chris Giles is brilliant as the widow Lady Cressida Arlington, while Peter Farrin is likeable as the well-educated Richard Harker.
The nosy cousins Mabel and Dorothy are well played by Teresa Woolven and Jenny Arnott respectively, the latter having stepped into the character vacated by Faye.

Nora Crouch is the epitome of a well-behaved servant as Mrs Hodge, while Mike Santer shows tenderness for the Arlington family as Aubrey Dachett.

The cast also includes Paul Birch as the rector, Nick Simmonds as Doctor Shaw-cross and Colin Bish as Insp Eaton.

This is a tale of ghosts, murder and revenge, which has a sense of mounting suspense and is sensitively directed by Martin Woolven.
The last performances can be seen at Cowes’s Trinity Theatre today (Friday) and tomorrow.
